District Partners with Local Agency

 

Williamsburg County School District partnered with SC Vocational Rehabilitation on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, along with other school districts and Georgetown Kraft Credit Union to celebrate National Disability Employment Month.

Sixty-two students from Williamsburg County School District, Florence School District Three and Florence School District Five participated in the Disability Mentoring Day activity that was facilitated by Nikki Ewing, Vice President of Georgetown Kraft Credit Union, Georgetown, South Carolina.

According to Vocational Rehabilitation, this year’s event was very successful and students gained information that was valuable for their success in future endeavors. 

Area Supervisor with Vocational Rehabilitation, Teresa Moses, said, “The month of October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month as well as an opportunity to provide a transition activity, which we call Disability Mentoring Day, to the students we serve and those who are interested in Vocational Rehabilitation services.”

Throughout the presentation, students provided feedback to the facilitator while teachers, instructional assistances, and Vocational Rehabilitation staff memers assisted students as needed.  On hand to support, as needed, was Kenndra Brown, Transitional Counselor with Vocational Rehabilitation.

SCVRD partnership with the Georgetown Kraft Federal Credit Union provided an interactive and engaging experience to students.  Moses added, “This activity was so engaging that teachers who participated along with their students wanted to continue this experience to share with other students at their individual schools. This would be a great help as time was limited and many students required additional assistance to gain an understanding of money management.”

Director of Special Services with Williamsburg County Schools, Thelvanese Murphy, believes that the benefits of this experience are priceless to district students because it helps them to master transitional skills and interpersonal skills needed for successful employment. She added that the opportunity for students to collaborate with other students was also beneficial. “I look forward to doing more events like this especially with community partners and students from other districts,” Murphy added.

According to Moses, SCVRD’s goal is to make sure that students focus on the financial necessities in life and grooming them to be financially responsible for the decisions they make as they transition from school to work.
